Location help

Enter geographical coordinates into the boxes to delimit area of interest, or, use the map icon to select area.

To activate the map search first click on the map icon, then click once on the map to set the upper left corner of your bounding box, then drag the pointer down and to the right until you have delimited your area of interest. The geospatial coordinates created by the box will be displayed in the lat/long boxes below the map. The numerical values generated can be adjusted before clicking on “select lat/long”

Enter a discrete water depth or a range, either alone or in conjunction with lat/long criteria above.

Tectonic setting help

Choose from the scrollable list of tectonic settings. Note that many publications lack this information, in which case it may have been assigned by SedDB staff.

Geographical name help

Searches can be made either by selecting from a list of geographical names in the database, or by entering a geographical name into the search box. E.g. Pacific Ocean samples can be found by selecting “Pacific Ocean” from the list or by typing the word “Pacific” into the search box. Note: the search is not case sensitive.

Other options help

Select by ODP:

A series of windows will open where you can select legs, then holes, and finally cores from a ODP/DSDP specific cruise.

Select By Core Type:

Clicking here will return all the cores in the database. You can then either continue with all cores, or refine your search by choosing from the filtering options.

Select By Sample Lithology:

Clicking here returns all the samples in the database. You can then either continue with all samples selected or refine your search on the basis of sediment type (lithology), sample age, or data availability (e.g give me all carbonate of Miocene age, analyzed for stable isotopes).

Select Sample Type:

To delimit your search by type of material analyzed click here. Examples of material types are: bulk sediment, pore water, grain size fractions, biogenic groups such as foraminifera or diatoms.

Select References:

Search here for a particular title, author, publication year, or loading date into the data base.

Select Analytical Parameters:

To look for a particular chemical item or any combination of items, use this search. Once you have selected item(s) of interest you will be able to filter by analytical method. E.g. give me all samples analyzed for CaCO3 and DELTA_O18.

Search By Igsn/Name:

If you know the IGSN (International Geo Sample Number) enter it here. To date most IGSNs relate to ODP Holes and Cores.

Searching by name allows you to locate a core by entering the first letter(s) of a core name eg. “rc” will turn cores from Robert Conrad cruises.
